Genre Discovery: Josei Manga Recommendations

There are lots of genre when it comes to any form on media and manga is no exception. In the last two years, I dove into yaoi and horror manga: a small attempt at expanding my horizons. Starting with a recommendation from my best friend, I’ve decided to explore ‘josei’ manga more. Explore the genre with me, and get started on these josei manga recommendations I have for you!

Keep in mind:

  • No Spoilers here! So please read freely and don’t hesitate to share!
  • 18+ content!! Most of the series featured here are smutty of varying levels, so if this is not your cup of tea, please feel free to skip this blog post!
  • Ongoing Series. The below mentioned series are yet to finish, but have at least 20 chapters under them at the moment.

Dekinai Futari

Josei Manga Recommendations: Dekinai Futari

Dekinai Futari was the manga recommended by my best friend. I was looking for a light read to pick up and since this was sitting in my library I decided to give it a go. I’m so happy I picked this up because this series puts a really good spin on a classic enemies-to-lovers trope. I thought I knew what I was signing up for, but I was so wrong. This is a josei manga recommendation I’m happy to make simply because of the angle the story takes on childhood romances.

Yes, our protags are childhood friends, but their lack of communication resulted in massive problems between them. I like that Dekinai Futari emphasises how difficult communicating can be, even if you know it’s what you need to do. Even if you’re two adults who can think rationally. There’s a lot of importance on words and the impact it has on people. And as an ongoing series, I’m really excited to see where the manga is headed.

Dakara Mou Koishinai

Josei Manga Recommendations: Dakara Mou Koishinai

Okay, I’m not going to lie about this. If you want a josei manga recommendation with tasteful smut, then this is it. Dakara Mou Koishinai might be a poor-girls-meets-rich-guy trope, but I wouldn’t chalk it up to just that. Akira is not exactly poor either, but she’s down on her luck, and Kotaro was quite literally the pick me up she needed. The story appealed to me in more ways than one. And I’m not just talking about the sex.

What I loved about the series is how it choose to highlight the impact Akira’s struggles have had on her. The woman she’s become, how she looks at herself, the pressures she continues to endure and how it’s affecting her current relationship. I do think the progression of our leads might have been a tad bit too fast. But I’m fairly sure the story has just begun. The art style is also new to me, so it might not be everybody’s cup of tea. However, its a fun read and I hope you enjoy!

Honnou Switch

Josei Manga Recommendations: Honnou Switch

Honnou Switch is by far my favourite josei read and the josei manga recommendation I’m the most happy to make. I started reading Honnou Switch just as the unofficial English translations had started rolling out. This is also another childhood friends-turned-lovers story, but here’s the tiny twist. Crippled by the fear of losing each other forever, they don’t tell each other for the longest time. When I first started reading the manga this felt silly to me. How would you know if you didn’t try? But I continued reading the manga and realised with the kind of friendship they had it must have been excruciatingly difficult to keep stewing in your own emotions.

I love Honnou switch simply because it was very nice to see a healthy adult relationship. It shows the different kind of struggles they go through, but also silly stuff like Koyori not wanting Hijiri to see her in a face mask. It’s a lovely wholesome read, and while the original series ended with the 8th volume, the English translation is out only for 5. I’m so looking forward to the rest of the story, and I hope you’re looking forward to starting it.

My plan wasn’t to write a list about josei manga or to even start reading josei manga at all. But lately I’ve been picking my titles randomly, and I’m enjoying it. Have I thrown away the schedule I so painstakingly created for myself? Yes. But is this randomness allowing me to enjoy what I’m consuming more? Definitely. I’m glad I wrote this. This was a really nice breather from writing heavy stuff. I hope this list was helpful ^_^

Until next time!
